Leboda

Do you want to know common LED street lighting myths? Then, it would be best if you read this. Here are five common myths about LED street lighting.

In many parts of the white lights are replacing yellow street lights. More cities are choosing LED street lights over older lights which have raised debate about the efficiency of LED. Most discussions compare LED and older street lights.

The more people talk about it, the more LED street lights we have. Cities use LED for its increased efficiency and reduced heat. Sometimes, even for its long lifespan and reliability. So, many firms have shifted to make LED street lights. This has helped firms meet market demand.

Also, LED lights have reduced crime rates. It has also improved business sales. This is because shops can open for longer hours. Theatres can have night shows. Night cab services have more security while driving. And LED tech only continues to advance in street lighting.

Thus, with the increase in tech and more voices for sustainability. Many discussions have arisen about the use of LEDs. Some are pro-LED street lighting, while others are against it. Still, amid it, facts and myths have arisen. Some people have spread myths about LED. So, here we have collected five of these myths. But first, what is LED lighting?

What is LED Street Lighting?

It is simply the move from yellow to white street lights. It involves the use of LEDs for street lights.

So, it is a system of street lights using light-emitting diode technology. This tech helps to save energy and increase efficiency. Physically, the light changes from yellow to white lights.

There are many reasons for the switch to LEDs. One is that it improves peripheral vision at night. So, it helps drivers identify objects quickly. Thereby, it reduces motor accidents at night. LEDs are also eco-friendly with focused reflection.

What is a Myth?

We are used to myths. We have either heard them or have watched some mythical movie. Well, the context here is a bit different.

The myth here refers to misconceptions about LEDs. It is a widely held belief about LED that is false. Often, we do not know the origin of these myths. But they spread like wildfire, and soon everyone has such belief.

Myths about LEDs could arise from discussions heard. It could also come from reading the wrong thing. Wherever it may have come from, it is false. So, we have gathered some of these together for you.

5 Common Myths about LED Street Lighting!

Over the years, many myths have arisen about LEDs. Some say it is harmful to humans and even animals. Others say it is terrible for the environment. Or that its white lights are blinding.

Many myths have arisen from discussions about using LED street lights. These misconceptions have spread widely. And though there are many, we’ll focus on common ones.

So, here are five common myths about LED street lights;

1.LED lights have a short lifespan

One of the most common myths is on LED lifespan. There are many false beliefs about the lifespan of LEDs. Many say that LED lights have a short lifespan. That, unlike yellow light, they burn out quickly. And many people have accepted this false belief.

Producers estimate the lifespan of the LED street light to reach ten years. This is three times more than yellow lights, of 3 years. So, LED lights last three times longer than older street lights. This long lifespan helps to save costs and resources. You save money on replacing street lights every three years.

LED street light doesn’t burn out. Instead, it has its light decay process. But while myths say this is affected by the weather. Its light dimming process is independent of weather and temperature.

This ensures that external factors don’t affect the LED’s brightness. Whereas for incandescent lights opposite is the case.

So, LEDs generally have a long lifespan. Thus, rather than check the use time buying, you should check the light decay speed. So, this is just a myth about LED street lighting.

2.LED Lights are harmful to humans

Another famous myth is that LED is harmful to humans. Some go further to say that it harms animals too. Well, this is just a false belief. Read on and know the truth.

People generally think all short-wavelength light is harmful, but this is not true. Short-wavelength lights are crucial in nature. It is present in many processes, including sunlight.

Short-range lights increase beauty and safety. Thus, it is vital for street lighting. But excessive of it isn’t good.

Know that LED lights do not harm humans. Neither does it harm animals. It is even safer than older yellow street lights. That is because it can reduce blue light emitted.

Although blue light is known to cause headaches, nausea, etc. There is no research showing that blue LED is more harmful. Blue light is a general issue for all street lights.

So, know that LED street lighting doesn’t harm you. Also, neither will it cause skin irritation or sickness. LED lights are safer than yellow lights because it emits less heat. So, this is merely a myth about LED lighting.

3.LED Light has a high intensity that consumes power

Unlike what producers say, myths say LED consumes high power. People believe that LEDs are highly intense and consume power. That for a light to be such intense energy is consumed.

But that is a false belief because LED turns energy into light. The strength of the LED doesn’t affect its power. Instead, the power consumed depends on its brightness.

LED street lights are electrically powered. Sometimes, it could be solar-powered. So, the electric power is immense.

But the higher the brightness, the higher the intensity. Also, the more intense it is, the higher the brightness.

So, less focus is on its strength and more on its brightness. For instance, a red LED could 1200mcd illumination, 40ma current, and 0.48W. A white LED 1200mcd, 18ma current, and 0.24W power. This shows different levels of power.

For LEDs, emphasis should be on their brightness.

4.LEDs cannot operate in cold weather.

Some people say that LEDs don’t work in cold weather. They say that it would be affected by the cold conditions. Thus, they aren’t ideal for outdoor usage. Well, that is a false belief.

LED lights work even more efficiently in cold weather. In the cold, LED lights still turn on immediately.

Also, it has parts that adjust to cold conditions. That its heat dissipation increases during cold weather. This helps to keep the lights in good working conditions.

LED street lights do not contain toxic substances. It does not contain mercury and lead. So, it is safer than ordinary street lights. Also, it operates in cold better than ordinary street lights.

5.LEDs do not disperse heat.

This is the last on our list of myths. It states that LED lights don’t dissipate heat. People believe it has poor heat dissipation, despite its high resistance. Thus, they say fire hazards may occur during use.

People also state that this brings extra cost. This is because you’ll have to install a separate heat dissipation system. But that is not true.

Although LED focuses on electricity resistors, it also has a good heat dissipation system. LED lights have a heat sink that disperses heat.

When tested, it reduces heat by about 3-5 degrees. When the heat resistance is zero, the temperature can be reduced by 3-5 degrees. This shows that the natural heat sink is effective.

It is also close to the radiator. So, do not believe that LED doesn’t disperse heat. Or that you need unique parts to dissipate heat. No, LED lights have a natural system for heat dispersion.

Final Thoughts

LED lighting is a famous debate concerning street lighting. New perspectives are constantly arising in this major discussion, with some people bringing points supporting LED lights. At the same time, others give points against the use of LED street lights.

But among it all, many false beliefs arise. People say things without proper research. And the public accepts it as truth, like that these myths continue to spread about LED lighting. But we have shown you some of these myths. We have also explained to you why they are false.

So, now you know that LEDs have a long lifespan. We can boldly tell you that LEDs don’t harm you. Neither do they hurt your dogs or other animals? LED lights are safer than yellow lights. They emit less heat and are eco-friendly.

LED street lighting operates effectively in cold conditions. Its system adjusts to the weather to increase heat dispersion. So, please do not spread false beliefs about LEDs. Always read up to know what is true or not.
